Nikon FM2 vs Pentax K1000: Which Beginner Film SLR Should You Buy?
The two most recommended beginner film SLRs, compared on build, metering, lens ecosystem and price. One is a tank, the other is a classic teaching tool.
The short answer
The Pentax K1000 is the purest learning camera: one meter needle, one shutter dial, nothing else. The Nikon FM2 is the better long-term system camera: a faster 1/4000 shutter, a huge F-mount lens pool, and a body that survives almost anything. Buy the K1000 if you want simplicity and the lowest price; buy the FM2 if you want room to grow.
Build and feel
The K1000 is a solid, all-metal camera, but it is a simple one. There is no depth-of-field preview on most copies, the film advance is functional rather than silky, and the finder is bright but basic.
The FM2 feels like a professional tool. The titanium-honeycomb shutter is rated for 1/4000 and a huge number of actuations, the advance is crisp, and the finder is excellent. It also offers a depth-of-field preview and a self-timer.
Metering and controls
Both are fully manual, which is exactly what a beginner should learn on. The K1000 uses a simple centre-weighted needle match system: centre the needle and shoot. The FM2 adds LED exposure indicators plus a 1/4000 top speed and a 1/250 flash sync.
The K1000’s limitation is its top speed of 1/1000. In bright sun with fast film, that can force you to stop down or use a slower film. The FM2’s 1/4000 gives you far more freedom with ISO 400 film wide open.
Lens ecosystem
This is the FM2’s decisive advantage. Nikon’s F mount spans more than half a century of lenses, from affordable AI-S primes to professional glass. The Pentax K mount is also excellent and has many great lenses, but the sheer depth and availability of F-mount glass is unmatched.
For a beginner, cheap 50mm f/1.8 or f/2 lenses are plentiful for both. As you grow, the Nikon path offers more options.
Price and availability
The K1000 is usually the cheaper of the two and was made in huge numbers, so clean copies are everywhere. The FM2 costs more, especially the later FM2n, and prices have risen with the film revival. Budget for a CLA (clean, lubricate, adjust) on either.

If you want to learn the exposure triangle with zero distractions, the K1000 is perfect. If you already know you will keep shooting for years, the FM2 is the smarter investment.
