Long Exposure Film Photography: Meter, Filter, and Time It Right

How to shoot long exposures on film: meter without the filter, choose the right ND, compensate for reciprocity failure, and lock the camera down so the frame stays sharp.

A long exposure on film is not just a slower shutter. Feel the difference the moment you pass a second or two: film quietly loses effective speed, the meter you trusted at 1/250 stops telling the whole truth, and a single tap on the tripod turns ten careful seconds into a soft frame. This guide puts the steps in the order that actually works.

The short version

  1. Meter the scene with no filter on the lens.
  2. Pick the ND that turns that shutter into the time you want.
  3. Add compensation for reciprocity failure.
  4. Lock the camera down and release it without touching it.
  5. Bracket, and keep notes.

1. Meter before the filter goes on

Meter the scene as you normally would and note the shutter at your chosen aperture. If the meter needle sits at the bottom of its range, meter something brighter that sits in the same light, such as a grey card, and transfer the reading. Do not meter through the ND filter unless your meter is designed for it: most in-camera and phone meters simply give up in near darkness and return a wrong number with full confidence.

Write the reading down. You are about to multiply it, and a number in your head is a number you will doubt later.

2. Choose an ND that reaches your target time

Every stop of ND doubles the time. ND8 is three stops, ND64 is six stops, and ND1000 is ten stops. The useful question is not “which filter is strongest” but “which filter lands my shutter where I want it”.

A metered 1/250 of a second becomes about 4 seconds behind an ND1000, about 16 seconds behind an ND4000, and so on. If you need minutes, start from a metered time that is already slow, or stack a second filter.

Two practical notes. First, stacking stacks the colour cast too: cheap ten-stop filters push a magenta or blue cast that is hard to remove from slide film. Second, a very dense filter makes framing and focusing almost impossible through the viewfinder, so compose and focus first, then mount the filter.

3. Do not forget reciprocity failure

Beyond roughly one second, film behaves differently from digital. The effective speed falls, so the time you calculated is now too short. The correction depends on the film family: most modern colour negative films need only a little, while many black and white and budget stocks need substantially more.

4. Lock the camera down

Long exposures punish every weak link in the chain. Use a tripod that does not wobble in wind, hang a bag from the centre column for mass, and avoid extending the centre column at all if you can. Use a cable release or the self-timer rather than your finger. On an SLR, lock the mirror up, and cover the eyepiece so light does not leak in from behind. On a breezy day, stand so your body shields the camera rather than leaning on the tripod.

If the shutter has no slow speeds, the bulb setting plus a release with a timer is the reliable route. Time the exposure with a phone stopwatch, start it after the mirror has settled, and add a second of slack on either end rather than cutting an exposure short.

5. Compose for motion

A long exposure is a tool for choosing what stays and what blurs. Standing water turns to glass, moving water turns to mist, clouds streak into lines, and traffic becomes ribbons of light. People walking through the frame mostly disappear if they keep moving and the exposure is long enough. Find a static anchor, a rock, a wall, a lit window, so the blurred elements have something to move against.

Composition matters more here, not less: the eye has no detail to hunt for, so strong shapes carry the frame.

Common mistakes

  • Metering with the filter on and trusting the result.
  • Forgetting the reciprocity correction on a calculated time.
  • Leaving the viewfinder uncovered and fogging the frame.
  • Touching the tripod while the shutter is open.
  • Not noting which frame was which exposure, so the bracket is useless later.
  • Expecting slide film to forgive a two-stop error. It will not.

Frequently asked questions

How long can I expose film before it breaks down? There is no hard wall. Exposures in the minutes are routine, and hours are possible, but the correction grows non-linearly and colour shifts creep in. Test your film and your process rather than trusting a single table.

Can I stack two ND filters? Yes, and it is common to reach very long times. Add the stops together, expect more colour cast, and check for vignetting on wide lenses.

Do I need a light meter at all? For night work a phone meter app or a spot meter helps for the initial reading, but the arithmetic after that is what matters. That is exactly what the calculators are for.

Does black and white film need the same correction? It needs correction too, but the amount differs by stock. HP5 and Tri-X and the budget films generally ask for more than Portra or Ektar.
